Safety Note:

Dryer will not start - Makes no noise when attempting to start.

Door Switch – The dryer stops whenever the door is opened during the dry cycle as a safety feature. When the door switch goes bad, the dryer “thinks” the door is open and will not start. Remove the door switch and take it to the U-FIX-IT store for free testing.

Dryer will not start - A noise can be heard and the motor seems to be trying to start.

Dryer bearings – The drum becomes harder to turn as bearings go bad until the motor can no longer start. Call U-FIX-IT Appliance Parts for free assistance in helping you determine why the motor will not start on your specific make and model.

Dryer (electric) turns but will not heat

Check the breakers in the main breaker box for the house. Many dryers have two breakers. Electrical surges can cause one breaker flip and not the other. When this happens the motor will run, but the dryer will not heat.

Heating elements can be visually inspected. They look like a stretched out door spring and they will have a break in them if they are bad. Bring it to the U-FIX-IT store for free testing and confirmation of your diagnosis.

Thermostat and/or fuse – If your heating element is good, call U-FIX-IT Appliance Parts for free assistance in locating and identifying your thermostats and fuses.

Dryer (gas) turns but will not heat.

Ignitor – 90% of the time the ignitor will be the problem. Bring you ignitor to the U-FIX-IT store for free testing.

Coil kit – This is the next most common problem on a gas dryer when the ignitor is good.

Dryer starts and runs but then stops. Can be started again after sitting idle for a time.

Bearings – The drum becomes harder to turn as bearings go bad causing the motor internal heat overload to stop the motor and prevent it from burning up. Dryer is making a scraping noise.

Bearings – Worn bearings can cause the drum to scrape against the cabinet. Call U-FIX-IT Appliance Parts for free assistance in helping you determine the problem with your specific make and model.

Dryer heats but takes a long time to dry.

Air flow – The drying process depends on heat and airflow to dry clothes. Insufficient airflow will cause the element to short cycle and will take a longer time to dry. The blower wheel slipping on the motor shaft can be the problem. Obstructions in the vent pipe going outside, kinks in the vent hose behind the dryer, and lint in the duct work can be problems. Clear coat on lint screen – Fabric softener towelettes added to clothes in dryer can cause a clear coating to form on the lint screen. Water will bead when poured onto the lint screen if it is coated. Scrubbing with soap and water will usually remove it.

Timer - It is usually not the timer

Timer problems do occur, but they are not common. The most common symptom when they do fail is: the timer will not advance regardless of where it is set in the cycle. Call U-FIX-IT Appliance parts for free assistance in confirming your timer diagnosis.
