Frigidaire Appliances Information

If you think it's called the fridge because it's a refrigerator, appliance historians kindly disagree. Until the early 1900s, it was referred to as the ice box. The stand-alone kitchen cabinet supported an enclosure on top filled with ice blocks. The Guardian Frigerator Company revolutionized cold food storage in 1916 with a self-contained system that left business at ice houses out in the cold. Its rebranding as Frigidaire in 1918 was so successful that homeowners soon referred to all kitchen refrigeration appliances by the shortened version of the company's name.

General Motors pounced on this public-relations dream come true and acquired the manufacturer in 1919. Between 1924 and 1938, GM's Frigidaire introduced the country to ice cream cabinets, home food freezers and air conditioning units for individual rooms. In the late 1940s, the company shook up laundry day with washers featuring vertical agitators and lint removal systems. Homes across the country brightened up in the 1950s when Frigidaire began offering color-coordinated appliances.

The brand changed hands once again in 1979 and now belongs to Electrolux. Frigidaire maintains a strong reputation with homeowners as a good value offering standard warranties on all its products. If you're interested in extended protection, the company sells plans that cover new purchases for an extra three years. Replacements and faulty equipment are handled through original retailers and home repair professionals. Today, Frigidaire continues to manufacture a full line of appliances.
